Finding A Dentist

In maintaining our oral (and overall) health, finding the right dentist is important. It is not, however, easy. As with nearly every decision in our lives, we must consider many factors: our specific needs, our comfort level, and our budget. Follow these tips to find the perfect dentist for you.

Use Word of Mouth:
We use recommendations from colleagues, friends, and family members for all sorts of things - which mechanic to use, which TV show to watch, which recipes to try. Use them for dentists as well. Ask people you trust whom they use in the area. Ask about all the criteria that's important to you: cost, comfort, procedures, etc. This way, you're not merely pulling names of a hat (or a phonebook). Instead, you're finding out specifics about the prospective dentists, and moving closer to an educated decision, rather than a blind one. Ask hospitals and medical clinics in the area to suggest a dentist. Dental colleges are also good resources to help you find a trustworthy dental practice.

Surf the Web:
The internet is a great source for just about anything you're looking for - including dental services. Search engines often provide local listings, with many of them rated on a scale of 0-5 stars. (There are also a number of "grading" websites that allow current and past patients to provide recommendations and referrals for you to chew on.) Of course, the website of the dental center itself provides a lot of information about the practice itself, so check that.

Special Dental Needs:
Of course, all of us need to consider our own personal dental needs and find a dentist to cater to that. Any dentist can perform cleanings and exams, but those of us who need extra attention, or attention paid to specific areas or issues, need to find personalized dental services. For example, if you need a root canal, search for endodontic dentists. If you're looking to make cosmetic tweaks (whitening, for example), look for dentists who specialize in that.

Check Your Dental Plan :
Try Them Out!  Consider using a new dentist for your exam and cleaning. (In fact, some will offer free or discounted exam/cleaning work to attract new patients.) This gives you a chance to observe the dentist in his or her element: working on patients!
